This has translated into a creative outlet of rug hooking, punch needle and knitting. This is where I write about what I am working on, new designs on the go and exploring the ins and outs of the creative process. Oh yes also some chit chat of daily life, books, baking and pictures of anything and everything....Joni of Fully Wooly Primitiveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02879298314954377630noreply@blogger.comBlogger186125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1467533691496707441.post-50632895881962426272013-10-01T19:01:00.002-04:002013-10-01T19:01:45.280-04:00Beautiful Days in PEI!

There is a great rug hooking show taking place in Summerside at the Eptek art Center until October 19th. If you have not been yet, please do not miss this show. It is absolutely wonderful with so many gorgeous rugs. There are so many talented rug hookers on the island. Sorry no pictures! You have to go see for yourself.

As I was in town I made a trip to a couple more places, Homestead Antiques on Fitzroy Street. I have been meaning to go for a couple of years now and finally got there this time. It is a treasure trove of primitives and reproduction antiques. I walked out with a couple of storage boxes for my sewing room (on sale too) and a Colin's Sheep. I collect them so was happy to get one here and not have to pay shipping. You can see them here.. Colin's Creatures.. these are some of his seasonal sheep - a little whimsical. I have one as an elf from last year.
The next stop was the harbour to pick up some fresh lobster meat. I had a yearning for some lobster rolls. Really they are so easy to make and I paid $9.30 for enough meat to make two. So tonight I made a mixture of lobster, celery, sweet onion and Hellman 's mayonnaise. Seasoned it with salt, pepper and grated rind of lemon. Got my rolls (have to be the ones that can be toasted on each side), layered baby spinach and added the lobster. so yummy! As a side I made fresh island potatoes, boiled with skin on, mashed with skin on, milk, butter, summer savoury and some garlic scape.. oh heaven..

On our way to PEI we had to stop in at Deanne Fitzpatrick's rug hooking studio in Amherst, NS. I wanted to check out the new Knitting Room that she had established in the back studio. I had been hearing about it all summer and was anxious to see what she had done with it. I was not disappointed! It was a blaze of colour. The whole shop was overflowing with colour and creativity! Needless to say I made a few purchases of yarn and some wool fabric bundles.

If you are around the area this Saturday - check the shop out as it is the grand opening and there will be lots of fun things planned along with a discount on the yarn.. have a great day.

Went to Summerside Farmer's Market early this morning and I was hoping to see the rug show at Eptek. Found out the exhibition is only open on weekdays and Sunday.. so put off for another day. We did go to the Farmer's Market in the old Holman building. It was down some stairs on the bottom floor and the walls were old stone.. so interesting. The building was built 1857. It was a small venue but had everything you would need. It was doing a bustling business. At least it was not the craziness of the Charlottetown market, which we have sworn off of.

These were my goodies from the market....
Bluebarb Pie and Grandma's ginger cookies from Shipwright's.
Fresh yellow beans
Blueberry lemon tarts and a mini carrot cake
Fresh smoke cured bacon - highly recommended by Chef Norm.

Then off we went back to Kensington to check out Al Picketts' Eureka Garlic... oh heavenly smell. Such a nice fellow and I'll be visiting again for my black garlic and other garlic buds. Did pick up some powdered garlic green scapes (again highly recommended by Chef Norm) and some garlic sand. The scapes are the top of the immature garlic which are dried and ground.. sweet and fragrant..no bitterness with this product. Here is a great link to find out more about black garlic and Eureka.

Have a great day... more pics of Summerside harbour.
It happens that Michael Smith who is a great Island chef was coming out with his new cookbook "Back to Basics" and I had to get my hands on it. A trip to Charlottetown to the Indigo there and lo and behold there it was but to my surprise this was the only book they had of his? So no cinnamon roll recipe. I had watched his cooking show the other day where he made some and it got me hankering for a pan of them. Off to his website where he has some of his popular recipes and there it was. Yay!

So gathered all my supplies with a trip to Paderno's for a lovely ceramic pan which matches the round one my Mom gave me last year for Christmas, so I was pleased with that purchase. Off to bulk barn for some basics...no King Arthur flour my go to staple nor did I expect any :( I always travel with my own Vietnamese cinnamon but forgot the vanilla. Then to find a rolling pin, of course not to be found and none in the cottage that I could remember. Got back and realized I forgot the yeast, so no baking that day.

So having held off for a day - we were going to the eastern portion of the Island to visit a couple of spots and I thought - Brenda Watts - wonderful woodworker..She is bound to have a rolling pin for me. Called her to find out she was shut down for the season but was happy to have me come to her shop - Islanders are like that. She had the perfect rolling pin. A french one with tapered ends handcrafted by her. Fell in love with the colour and was happy - the last french one which is what I wanted. You can see it in the picture above. So back we went and I went to work the next day on these rolls.

This is the first time I have made cinnamon rolls. I loved making them. Heidi Wulfraat of London-Wul was our first stop. She is located outside of Moncton, NB in Lakeburn. We went there last year for the first time and knew that this was a definite stop this year. Heidi was so helpful and friendly. Her website is www.thewoolworks.com. She advised me on the spinning wheel I should be looking for (at a reasonable price). Her variety of wool is awesome along with her own hand dyed wools and fabrics. It is eye candy for fibre artists for sure. Dare I stop on my way home:)...

While there I met Lucy Richards of The Wooly Mason Jar. She has a wonderful method of gradation dyeing in mason jars. There were quite a few samples of her wool so I bought a couple - oranges and purples. I am going to be using them in my new design for the Creativity class I am taking at Deanne's in October.

This year I took two classes at Annie's. She bought this old church in New London two years ago and renovated the interior. It contains a professional kitchen with a long, large store counter that divides the space into two. The other part contains a long antique banquet table where we get to sample what we have cooked. There are antiques and memorabilia of the church spread around the walls along with some comfy chairs. It's a beautiful, relaxing place to learn some new cooking skills. Chef Norman is a fountain of knowledge and only too willing to share what he knows. I have had two wonderful lunches as a result of the classes and have enjoyed it so much.

Last week I took a course on cooking with potatoes. So we made potato bannock (this is going to be my go to quick bread), potato latkes that were topped with Island smoked salmon, capers and a herbed sour cream, chocolate potato cake to die for and lastly potato gnocchi. I never knew it was so easy to make.

I brought some of the gnocchi home and tonight I made a bechamel sauce with red onions, red peppers, yellow/green zucchini, some island summer savoury and garlic. It was fast - easy and delicious! Definitely will be making more gnocchi at home and freezing it in portions. So much tastier than the store bought kind!

Yesterday I took a course on soup making.. it was a potato bacon chowder with smoked island trout and the second one was a Middle Eastern soup called Harira - a traditional Ramadan Soup which was so exotic in flavours and so delicious. It had lentils, chickpeas, rice, tomato and onion with spices I would not normally put in soup - cinnamon, cumin, ginger and tumeric.
Along with that we had 15 minute bread which was a course I took last year and the only bread I make - so easy.
I have changed all the blogs that I read to Bloglovin and love it. So easy to use - much more user friendly. So if you would like to continue following my blog, you can find the button on the right hand side of my blog page near the top, after what is for sale in my etsy shop. If you have already made the change.. thank you!Joni of Fully Wooly Primitiveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02879298314954377630noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1467533691496707441.post-37556092257226249102013-06-29T07:29:00.000-04:002013-06-29T08:11:17.053-04:00Blooming Flowers and LIam

On my frame is a pattern by Deanne Fitzpatrick... poppies, which I love. I needed something quick and easy to hook while I was mulling a design in my head and on paper. I like doing other people's designs. It contributes to their livelihood of making these wonderful patterns and sometimes you just need something where you don't have to think about it being your design but just an exercise in colour.. I call it playing with colours like when you got a new pack of crayons when you were a kid...

I have been coming to terms with my wool stash..I am a collector of darks and mediums. I am woefully lacking in brights and pales. So my goal is to start gathering, dyeing this colour palette. What I love to hook is changing or rather what I am designing is changing and it calls for a broader spectrum of hues. I am trying to jump out of my comfortable box and start exploring more colours...
Just another little item I picked up at Dorr Mills. I could not resist! It sort of found its way into my basket along with my wools....Beautiful Sheep - Postcard book of all kinds of sheep by Ivy Press. I think if you are going to use a product you should know more about it. So I am reading up on wool - what with my rug hooking, knitting, dyeing and spinning...it would make sense.
Yesterday - Sis and I had a 3 hour lesson spinning with a spindle. We had a blast! Lots of laughs and a lot of fun. A lovely lady by the name of Colette took us on and gave us a private workshop for 3 hours. I sure learnt a lot and I think this is something I may love. Another extension of my passion for wool.

We started off with some Tasmanian Corriedale (undyed) that I bought on Etsy as a starter spinning kit. I found out right away that my spindle was for light spinning (lace and fine fingering). So used one of the student spindles and my first attempt resulted in some nice lumpy bumpy wool (which I love) that I two plied. At least now I understand the terms and how yarn is made! I will probably dye the rest of the corriedale and use it for some other project. Maybe ply it with some novelty yarn or fleece to add to my rug hooking.

So this morning I was so anxious to practice my new found talent (HAHAHA) that I decided to use my spindle and spin some tussah green silk I had bought. Practice! Practice! that is the only way. So it is a little bumpy lumpy but that is ok ' cause I like it like that. I immediately saw the difference in spinning lace weight as it can get real thin and lots of spin is needed.

It will eventually be 3 plied with another silk and a merino/ silk blend, once I get the right spindle for a worsted weight. Hopefully it will be nice enough to knit into a cowl....my first spun and knit project. I love new adventures! Maybe I will have a wonderful spinning wheel to call my own next year - better save my toonies! Have a great afternoon....Joni

I have not knit a pair of socks in a couple of years. Now that I am into this knitting frenzy thought it was time to put some on the needles. I found this wonderul yarn called Lucky Penny from my favourite indie yarn dyer - Tanis Fiber Arts - who lives a hop, skip and a jump from me. It was a perfect match for my summer shoes that I wear (lime green) my new favourite colour. The sock pattern is called Business Casual which can be found on Ravelry. It's a free download!

In today's mail were some wool purchases. All from Turtlepurl Yarn, an indie dyer from Gatineau, Quebec. The roving came just in time for my spinning class tomorrow with Sis..should be a laugh or two! More on that in the next few days.
What is on my needles these days......
I seem to be in a knitting frenzy lately. That is the place where I am right now. Easy to pick up - requires no planning ( at least the projects I choose) and simple patterns that once you get the hang of them are easy to do. Nothing that is complicated.

Right now I am knitting a Rayures cowl - the pattern is from Quince & Co. It is knit on circulars and is doubled. A wonderful Maine company that was recommended by a friend. I have fallen in love with their colour palette and their yarns. For this cowl I am using "finch".
I was madly hooking this rug all last week to give to my sister yesterday for her birthday. We had a great time going out to lunch and did some shopping. I wanted to make her something special as it was her 50th and bittersweet as we lost our sweet mother a month ago.

I had Deanne Fitzpatrick draw up a design for me based on one of her original pieces. I love this design. Since my sister loves brighter colours than I do this was going to be a bit of a challenge to hook. I hemmed and hawed over the colours for weeks and kept changing my mind. Finally settled on a palette last Saturday. The countdown was on to finish it by the 22nd.

It's been almost a month that we have been away from home and loving every minute of it, but all good things must come to an end. Until next year - we'll be Island bound again. Yesterday I took a wonderful baking class at Annie's Table. On the menu was pie making - yummy. Now I can make cookies and squares but my pie crust has a lot to be desired. Well after this class - pies will now be baking in my oven. The most important thing I learnt was everything must be COLD. We made an apple pear rustic tart (pictured here) and a mock cherry pie. The latter is a pie made by Lucy Maud Montgomery using cranberries and raisins because cherries at that time were not available on the island and by the time they got here they were rotten so islanders made do.

To be honest I am not fond of cherry pie but this one with the cranberries is delicious! The crust was so flaky - I had never tasted any pie like that. Along with that we made lemon lavender scones - delicious little three bite scones perfect with a cup of tea. Another use for my lavender growing in my garden. If you are on PEI , take the time to check out Annie's Table - Culinary Studio, well worth the visit and a class!!

Just a couple of pics from my deck... you can see the Cabot Provincial Park - I think that may be a rug in the works. When I am here I often just go down back roads and explore bits of the island I have not seen. I love old barns and this was one I saw just perched on the cliffs overlooking the ocean. A beautiful spot! Off to do some more exploring - have a great day! Joni
I am a country girl at heart. I love the rolling hills dotted with sheep and cows, the ocean views and the vast blue sky. Last Sunday we went to the eastern side of the Island by-passing Charlottetowne. I am perfectly happy to just stay in the countryside.
They have some wonderful original designs which speak of Island life.
Half the holiday gone - two weeks to go....
I put away my Shore Birds rug as I ran out of wool. I did not intend it to be that big, so not enough wool was available to continue working on it. I did buy this kit from Deanne.. shhhh it is supposed to be a gift for my Mom. I wanted a kit as I wanted all the wool cut and at hand. I also wanted to work outside my usual box which is muddy muted colours and this rug calls for BRIGHTS! So I was hemming and hawing to sub some colours but decided no I would go with the colour of these houses as they are the colour of the houses you see along the country roads in the Maritimes. I just love the windows. One thing I've learned is instead of hooking a solid colour for the windows - hook a tweed. This is a white and black one and gives you the illusion of the play of light on the window or maybe someone peeking out the window. Don't be afraid to use textures. While hooking this I was making supper....
Supper tonight - fresh Island haddock (coated in Panko)from French River, local PEI potatoes and fresh island broccoli... yummmm my favourite supper fresh fish. Made enough for lunch tomorrow. Off to do more hooking. Enjoy your evening!

Today I thought I would talk a little about the class I took with Deanne Fitzpatrick of Amherst NS. I had never been to any class related to rug hooking so I was ready for anything. I had no preconceived notions so I was coming in with a clean slate. I loved the whole process- the venue and the class itself. It was so nice to be among fellow hookers as it is a rare opportunity for me. I tend to work in a vacuum and rely on my on line friends for inspiration and encouragement. The following pictures are from Deanne's blog which is a great read. I was so busy hooking and listening I forgot to take pictures!
Deanne's studio is beautiful so inspiring - lots of colour and textures. I could have bought so much more! Where we created was lovely. Bright and clean with books and pictures surrounding us - lots of great working surfaces and comfy chairs to embrace us. I should have taken pics of the before but you get the idea. A bunch of hookers and the wool is everywhere! The class was on the theory of colour given by Phyllis Cameron (fiber artist), who was a fountain of knowledge and opened up a whole new way of looking at colour.

I have this instinct about how to put together colour in a rug, but sometimes there is something very jarring about it. Something is not working. You don't know quite what it is but you play around with the fabric and the design and you get that AHA moment. This course was on the theory of how colour works together. the terms to describe their relationship and how you can make colour work. One thing I learned was that NO COLOUR is wrong - it's just how you put it together. You can make any design sing. You just need to know what your goal is and work towards that. There are so many great books and tools available at your fingertips and that discussion is for another day...

Just finished a course with Deanne Fitzpatrick on colour - had a super time and learnt lots. More about that in the coming days.

I am probably going to be changing the format of my blog and talk more about rug hooking and wool applique and everything to do with wool. I'll still talk about baking - cause I love it and anything else I don't consider too personal. I have learnt the hard way that I was too open with comments about my personal life and they were twisted and turned into something ugly by a family member. So I won't be posting any personal stuff on my blog anymore. It will be more about the pleasure and passion of rug hooking :) ...

I will continue with my FB page as Joni Black and there I will post more personal items...pics etc and that is because I can control who sees it. If you are a FB member and want an invite just send me one. My Fully Wooly Primitives FB page is again all about rug hooking or anything else I find inspiring about fiber arts.
Thanks for your understanding....have a great evening. JoniJoni of Fully Wooly Primitiveshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02879298314954377630noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1467533691496707441.post-13855424652608635192012-08-12T09:47:00.000-04:002012-08-12T09:47:10.347-04:00In the Dyepots Today

Today I am in dyeing mode. I have been putting it off because of the rain, since I like to hang my pieces outside to dry. I am going to be doing these colours, Wooly Sheep, Tantramar Marsh, Homestead Blue & Lemongrass Tea. Ohhh I just love the blue and the lemongrass.

When I was in Maine in May I bought myself two white dye pots. They are great as they can hold 2 yards at a time and give the wool that nice mottled look I love. This run I am dyeing 15-1/2 yards - a whole bolt!

Guess it is going to be over 3 days - no way do I have the time today for all that. Closing ceremonies are on at 4:00PM and I am an Olympic junkie. I only watch sports every two years... isn't that a hoot! Have a great Sunday!
My dear mother-in-law has her birthday today. It is not polite to say a ladies age so I won't - but my lord she does not look her age. What did she want for her birthday but a chocolate milk shake. I said at your age you can get or do anything you like! and what a fun day it was. We went to a new place for us -- Jukebox in Dollard des Ormeaux. She of course had her chocolate milkshake for her lunch and a shot glass of chocolate fudge sundae. Yummy! I had ....

Sorry I have been absent for a month - don't know how often I will get to blog. We are going through a family crisis right now with a member being quite ill so all my energy and focus has been there. So there has been no rug hooking happening. I think at night I only have enough energy to pick up a pair of knitting needles. I am hoping to get some hooking done next month when on holiday in PEI at the cottage on the ocean....sigh...sigh
